Master thatcher serving Devon & Somerset
Water reed, combed wheat reed, fixings and ridge types explained
Imported from trusted sources across Europe, including Turkey, Hungary, Poland and Austria, with Chinese reed also now available. Each bale is individually selected for the quality, size and properties needed for your roof.
Locally grown in Devon and Somerset using traditional varieties such as N59, Maris Widgeon, Red Standard, Victor and Huntsmen, plus hybrids like Triticale.
Made from hazel and twisted into pegs to fix the main body of the roof or hold the ridge down, or left straight to form the pattern work on the ridge.
A torque head screw with two stainless steel wires, screwed into the timber work and tightened around a horizontal fixing.
Hammered into the rafters and fixed around a horizontal bar on top of the reed.
The ridge protects the last layer of thatch and its fixings, so it is important to re-ridge before it wears out and the fixings below get damaged.
